Team Malawi Region 5 Games’ perfomance under review

Various stakeholders met in Salima yesterday to review Team Malawi’s performance at the delayed 2024 Region 5 Youth Games held in Namibia earlier this month.

A statement from Malawi National Council of Sports says the meeting attracted officials from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Sports Council,  Malawi Olympic Committee and team managers from 14 sports codes.

Reads the statement:  “The core objective of the review meeting is to reflect on the successes and challenges experienced by Team Malawi in Namibia and to map out strategic steps to enhance the team’s performance in future Region 5 Youth Games.”

The ministry’s director of sports Jameson Ndalama said such meetings are crucial as they help to identify strengths and challenges in various codes.

He said: “It is about  assessing where we did well and fell short and brainstorming on how we can overcome the challenges and also improve in areas where we did well.

“So, these meetings are crucial as they help in mapping the way forward so that when the next games come up, we should be ready.”

Swimming coach Yonas Sipawe hailed Sports Council and the Ministry for organising the assessment meeting.

“This is an opportunity for Sports Council  and government to appreciate the challenges that we face which in turn, affect the performance of our athletes at such games,” he said.

At the games, Team Malawi finished seventh out of 10 countries after clinching 33 medals comprising seven gold and 13 each in silver and bronze.

Team South Africa were the overall winners with 144 medals, including 67 gold, followed by Namibia with 90 medals, including 24 gold.
